If you’re looking for a fall getaway trip, chances are you’re hoping to see some beautiful foliage or take part in some sort of autumn-specific activity. So, we have curated this special list to highlight some of the best US-based cities to visit this fall.
1. Telluride, Colorado
Colorado is known for its mountains and wide array of outdoor sporting opportunities. Telluride is a city tucked into the mountains with abounding beauty. In the fall, you can expect to see colors that are absolutely breathtaking. Whether you prefer to take in the leaves from a cabin deck with your morning coffee, while you’re offroading, or after a captivating hike, you’ll be blown away by the variety of picturesque views. You can fly directly to Telluride or to one of the airports on the Frontage if you’d like to drive in and catch some extra scenery!
2. Hobart, Indiana
Indiana may not initially come to mind, but Hobart, Indiana houses one of the top-rated apple picking experiences. It doesn’t hurt that there are several cheap flights from Boise to nearby airports in Indiana. County Line Orchard is known for its apple cider donuts and for creating memorable and enjoyable fall adventures. They have a wide range of activities during fall months, fun apple picking, pumpkin picking, sunflower picking, hayrides, and campfires. Plus, you can check out the beehives that house the pollinators who keep these orchards blooming.
3. Levant, Maine
Of course we’d suggest the north east! Maine is home to Treworgy Family Orchards, a family-run orchard and farm that boasts an award winning corn maze. Not only do their corn mazes sport incredibly intricate designs and images, but they have the longest continual mazes in Maine. You will definitely get your daily step count in trying to make your way through or out of this maze!
4. New York City, NY
NYC hosts one of the most famous and widely known marathons. So, if you are a runner or interested in becoming a runner, it’s time to start preparing to spend one of your fall weekends in New York, running through the city with tens of thousands of other people. Of course, you can’t prepare to run a marathon overnight, but you can use an online training program to build a training schedule that will get you ready with a little bit of time.
5. Castile, New York
Letchworth State Park is located in the northwestern part of New York, and has lovingly been referred to as the “Grand Canyon of the East Coast.” It offers some of the best scenic hikes in the country and boasts over 23 trails with incredible views. This is exactly the kind of activity that invites you to pause and breathe, release any stress in the canyon, and take in the beautiful scenery.
6. Big Sur, CA
The west coast may have less to boast about when it comes to seasonal changes, but the northern parts of California offer some spectacular beauty as the landscape changes in fall with the ever-present backdrop of the coastline.
Big Sur is home to one of the best US-based yoga retreat centers, Esalen Institute. And with an airport only thirty minutes away (Monterey airport), it’s easy to access. Going on a yoga retreat is not typically associated with fall, but the seasonal change provides an opportunity for reflection and contemplation. Plus, you can take advantage of all the widely recognized benefits of yoga. So, why not go into your holiday season with a little less stress and a little more flexibility?
