Dwishojoyee Banerjee proves soft steps leave strong footprints

Magazine Stories

Not all heroes wear capes; some change the world quietly and steadily. Some ask simple questions that take the form of movements. Some dedicate their lives to creating change that lasts. Dwishojooyee Banerjee is one such hero, a young climate activist who believes in moving people from talking about climate action to actually taking action. Through her organisation, The Soft Move, she has empowered thousands of students to create tangible and lasting change.

When a question turned into a movement

From a very young age, Dwishojooyee’s mind was full of questions. When she was only four years old, she noticed the brand name on a soap, and she asked, “Why Life Buoy… not Life Human?” This question was the first sign of a mind unwilling to accept the world as it is and determined to imagine the world as it could be. That one question became a seed for a much larger movement in the future.

By the age of ten, she began teaching children through her parents’ NGO, Kahaanighar. In those early experiences, she learnt that change doesn’t need to be loud; it needs to be intentional. This philosophy led her to establish ‘The Soft Move’, an organisation that focuses on making an impact at the grassroots level through workshops that push young minds to take action.

The Paper Bag Project

The Paper Bag Project, led by her, is a community-led initiative that motivates students across India to upcycle newspapers to make paper bags, which are then distributed free of cost to small vendors like flower sellers, people who, despite bans on single-use plastic, have struggled to switch to sustainable alternatives. This project has reached over 15,000 students in 31 cities and replaced more than 200,000 single-use plastic bags.

Achievements to her name

Due to her selfless efforts to drive lasting impact, Dwishojoyee has many recognitions to her name. She has been named an Ashoka Young Changemaker, a Femina x Mama Earth Goodness Ambassador, and a BeVisioneers-Mercedes-Benz Fellow. She has also collaborated with global organisations like UNICEF, the World Economic Forum, and Save the Children to contribute to change at the global level.

Inspiring the next generation

We live in a world which is now obsessed with speed, visibility, and loud gestures, but Dwishojoyee believes that true impact grows slowly and quietly. The Soft Move, in all its works, shows that activism doesn’t need to shout to be heard; rather, it needs to touch hearts and create lasting impact.

Today, Dwishojoyee continues to inspire, teach, and expand her movement. Through her selfless work, she is creating and inspiring a generation that understands the importance of sustainability and the power of grassroots action. Her journey reminds us all that you don’t need to ‘grow up’ to create impact. She started as a child and kept walking on the path of service. Today, through her Paper Bag Project and The Soft Movement, she has shown thousands of students that even the smallest hands can carry the heaviest responsibility. They are all contributing to protecting our Mother Earth.

Whenever a student folds a paper bag, a vendor says no to plastic, and a child asks a question, her movement becomes bigger. Maybe the next step is ours.
