Aien Amri: The Moringa Girl

Magazine Stories

‘Let’s green our homes, green our future, ’ a movement that started with one woman’s belief that change can grow from your own backyard.

When the entire world was shut down during the pandemic, when fear and uncertainty filled the air, somewhere in Nagaland, a young woman named Aien Amri looked out her window and saw possibility. As a medical health counsellor, she had seen how fragile life could be. Yet, she realised that nature never stops healing. The trees still breathed, birds still sang, and the soil still gave. That moment changed everything for her, and that’s when Aien decided to plant hope.

When the first seed sprouted

Aien and a few of her friends founded Nature, Pet Guardians Nagaland. At first, they focused on planting kitchen gardens and local trees, but soon something magical caught her eye, which was the moringa tree.

Widely known as the ‘miracle tree’, moringa has great nutritional value. It is packed with nutrients, boosts immunity and heals the soil it grows in. At that moment, Alien thought that if one tree could do so much, what if thousands could?

That thought became the foundation of her dream project – Climate Action 2025.

Her vision

Alien’s vision is deeply rooted in purpose. She aims to plant one million moringa trees across Northeast India by 2025.

Nagaland was the first to take the bold step. The state planted 150,000 moringa seeds in schools, church grounds, and community gardens. The movement soon began to spread to other neighbouring states, including Meghalaya and Manipur. It transformed what started as a local movement into a regional wave of climate action.

A movement of many hands

Aien believes that when communities unite around a cause, change becomes unstoppable. So she built partnerships with schools, NGOs, churches and local groups.

Soon, teachers were guiding students on how to plant moringa seeds, and church volunteers started planting as well. Families began growing moringa at home once they understood its health benefits. Soon, every hand that planted a tree contributed towards a movement.

Earth is in the ICU

Aien has a way of explaining her mission that stops people in their tracks. She says, “The Earth is in ICU. Let’s all be its doctors.” For her, the climate crisis is a health emergency. One that demands care, empathy, and consistent effort.

She simply says, “Start with one tree. Grow one. Grow many. Let’s green our homes. Green our future.”

It’s a reminder for all of us that healing the planet doesn’t need to wait for tomorrow. It can start today. Because sometimes, hope doesn’t arrive with fanfare or fame. It arrives quietly in the form of a young woman planting a moringa seed and believing that the world can grow better again.

Aien has shown us that even in a time of crisis, we can grow something meaningful. That sustainability does not have to start with grand speeches and counselling sessions, it can begin with our own hands, our own soil and our own home. Let’s all join our hands to protect our Mother Earth and contribute, not just in words, but in action.
