Her early life

Isha came into the world on October 23, 1991, in Mumbai, right in the heart of the Ambani empire. She is the twin sister of Akash, with a younger brother, Anant, rounding out the trio. Growing up in the kind of wealth, be it private jets or a 27-storey home, didn’t spoil her. Her mother, Nita Ambani, drilled in the value of giving back to society through Reliance Foundation, while her father, Mukesh Ambani, built an empire from petrochemicals to everything else. But Isha? She wanted to earn it on her own.

Her early schooling happened at Dhirubhai Ambani International School, the family’s own top-tier setup in Mumbai. Then she headed to the U.S. to attend Edith Cowan University in Australia and studied abroad to gain exposure to a global perspective. Yale became her home from 2009 to 2013. She double-majored in Psychology and South Asian Studies. Then, she led the South Asian Society to fight for better education back home.

Fresh out of Yale, she landed at McKinsey & Company in New York as a business analyst. Why did she choose a consulting firm over her family empire? She wanted to gain an understanding of the business world on her own terms, away from the family name. When she handled clients and worked on data late into the night, that experience sharpened her skills. Then, in 2018, she earned her MBA from Stanford, just as Reliance shifted focus to digital and retail. She was ready.

Entering into the family business

Retail became her true strength. She leads Reliance Retail, now India’s top earner, surpassing Flipkart and Amazon India. In 2025, it recorded 3,30,870 crore gross revenue, reaching more than 378 million customers in fashion, tech, and groceries. Furthermore, she launched Ajio in 2016 for online fashion and Tira for beauty.

Through her dedicated efforts, in 2019, Reliance Retail was the world’s fastest-growing retailer and entered the global top 100 and Asia’s top 10. In August 2022, she was appointed as the CEO of Reliance Retail by her father. In July 2023, she closed a deal with GAP, America’s biggest apparel brand, and launched over 100 outlets across India.

Her philanthropy

Beyond business, Isha helps run the Reliance Foundation as the Co-Founder. The foundation works for various causes like education, healthcare, sports & rural development, and disaster response. Isha has played an instrumental role, specifically in the field of education, by promoting digital schooling and sports for all. She has started initiatives like ‘We Care, We Volunteer’, which aims at providing education, art, and storytelling for underprivileged children.

Feathers in the cap
