Net Worth $173.3 billion.

Background Of Larry Ellison

Larry Ellison was born on August 17, 1994, and he was born in the Bronx. After he caught pneumonia, his mother gave him away to her aunt and uncle in Chicago so that they could raise him. He lived in a two-bedroom apartment on the city’s south side. Ellison’s adoptive father worked as an Auditor for the United States Department of Agriculture.

His adoptive mother, Lillian Ellison, was a stay-at-home mother. Larry Ellison had shown an aptitude for math and science from a young age. At the University of Illinois, he became the science student of the year.

He had dropped out of college and bounced from one job to another. He worked at Amdahl Corporation, where he gained experience and expertise in Computer programming. As a programmer at Amdahl Corporation, he participated in building the first IBM-compatible mainframe system.

Foundation Of Software Development Labs

In 1997, Ellison and two colleagues from Amdahl, Robert Miner and Ed Oates, founded their company, named Software Development Labs. Larry and his partners won a two-year contract to build a relational database management system (RDMS) for the CIA, and the project’s code name is Oracle. Larry Ellison and his team had become pioneers in the development of relational databases. They created a system capable of storing and retrieving the data efficiently.

In 1980, the company had only eight employees. The company had a revenue of less than $ 1 million. Later that year, IBM adopted Oracle for its mainframe system, and the revenue doubled each year. The company went public in 1986. But due to the company’s zealous staff, it reported its first losses in 1990.

Other factors like economic challenges, rapid expansion and the changing technological landscape were also responsible for the losses faced by the company. A new version of the database program released in 1992 was Oracle 7. The design of Oracle 7 provides enhanced scalability, performance and advanced data management capabilities. It helps solidify Oracle’s position as a leader in relational database management systems.

Rise of the Oracle

Larry Ellison, Bob Miners and Ed Oates founded Oracle in 1977. The company initially focused on creating relational database management systems(RDBMS). In 1979, they released Oracle V2, the first commercial SQL-based RDBMS. By the 1990s and early 2000s, they ventured into creating software solutions, including ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) and CRM (Customer Relationship Management).

In 1979, SDL was renamed Relational Software Inc. In 1982, it officially became Oracle Systems Corporation. Throughout the 1990s, America’s banks, airlines, automobile companies, and retail giants became dependent on Oracle’s database programs. Under Ellison’s leadership, Oracle became a pioneer in providing business applications over the Internet. In 1994, Oracle acquired an RDBMS called Rdb division from DEC. It was the first acquisition by Oracle.

By 2004, Oracle acquired PeopleSoft, Inc. for $10.3 billion. The acquisition was necessary because the company had 12,750 customers. It provided human resource management systems, chain supply management, customer relationship management and financial management solutions. On April 29, 2008, Oracle Corporation bought BEA Systems for $8.5 billion.

The company specialises in enterprise infrastructure software products. On 27 January 2010, Larry Ellison agreed to acquire Sun Microsystems for $7 billion. After all these acquisitions, Oracle began to sell technologies, using new databases and services based on Sun Microsystems technologies.

In the 2010s, Oracle shifted its focus to Cloud Computing and developing its cloud infrastructure and services. The company introduced the concept of “Autonomous Database.” The database uses AI and automation to manage and secure the databases. Additionally, the company continues to expand into technologies like blockchain, artificial intelligence and machine learning. Their cloud offerings are a worthy competitor to companies like Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure.

Features Of Oracle

Oracle is a product from Oracle Corporation that provides a relational database management system. Below are some of the features of the database systems:

  • Scalability and Performance

Features like Real Application Clustering and Probability make a database scalable according to its use. In a multiuser database, this feature can control data consistency and concurrency. These features allow the organisation to handle the growing data volume and help maintain the performance levels.

  • Availability

Real-time applications require high data availability. You can configure higher-performing computing environments to provide all data availability.

  • Backup and Recovery

Oracle offers a tool called Recovery Manager (RMAN). It provides a centralised and efficient way to back up data. The system allows for recovery to a specific point in time. It enables real-time data replication and automatic failover, ensuring high availability and disaster recovery capabilities.

  • Security

Securing the data is the priority, and the system provides a mechanism to control data access and usage. The system can provide unauthorised access and give distinct access to the users. Oracle prioritises data security, offering encryption and access.

  • Advanced Analytics

Oracle includes tools for advanced analytics, data mining and machine learning. It enables the organisation to gain insights from the data that is collected.
