Sometimes life surprises us when we least expect it. For Anita Rathi, a new chapter began at the age of 40 when she joined a gym to improve her health. She had no plans of becoming an athlete. Yet, within a few years, she would go on to represent India as an international powerlifter.
Anita was born and raised in Barmer, Rajasthan and was like many women who dedicated most of their lives to their families, responsibilities, and loved ones. As a wife and mother of three children, her days revolved around taking care of them. Like countless women across India, she put her dreams on hold.
But in 2019, her life took a turn when she took a decision that changed her life forever. She joined a gym at the age of 40. She has no grand plans. She had no dreams of winning any medals, championships or international fame. All she wanted was to improve her health, become stronger, and take better care of herself.
For her, starting fitness training at 40 came with its own challenges. There were physical limitations, self-doubt, and societal expectations that often tell women their athletic years are behind them. Yet Anita kept showing up. Day after day, workout after workout, she built not only physical strength but also confidence.
Slowly, the weights became heavier. And so did her belief in herself. What started as a personal commitment gradually transformed into a professional passion. In May 2022, she entered competitive powerlifting, and within a short span, she progressed from state-level competitions to representing India at the international level.
“Over the past two years, I have won 15 medals, including 5 gold, 8 silver, and 2 bronze medals at state and national championships held across India. One of the most defining moments of my career was securing 4th rank at the World Bench Press Powerlifting Competition in Texas, USA, in the Master I, 57 kg category, in May 2024,” shares Anita.
Her achievements have been recognised through honours such as the National Atal Award, the Shakti Vandanam Award, recognition by the All India Maheshwari Federation, and the Barmer Naari Shakti Award.
Challenges In Her Path
As a wife and mother of three, Anita had to balance her training with family life. Finding time for workouts, travelling for competitions, and staying consistent were not always easy. Like many women, she was used to putting her family’s needs before her own. However, she realised that taking care of her health was equally important. With support from her family and her own determination, she continued her fitness journey and gradually made sports a part of her daily life.
Moreover, there came moments of self-doubt when she felt discouraged, but she lifted herself. She believes that many women face challenges, whether it is social expectations, a lack of awareness about fitness, or family responsibilities.
Inspiration For Other Women
Anita’s vision is to create awareness and inspire women of all ages to prioritise fitness and believe that age or responsibilities should never be a barrier. She says, “I want to see more women in sports and inspire the girl child to confidently participate in competitive sports from an early age. At the same time, my dream is to represent India on the highest international platforms, to hear our national anthem played and proudly hold the Tiranga on the global stage.”
Her mission is to promote strength training among women, mentor aspiring athletes, and contribute to a healthier, more confident society. Through her journey, she aspires to prove that dedication, discipline, and self-belief can transform lives, not just physically, but mentally and socially as well.
A Journey That Started With One Step
When Anita joined the gym in 2019, she had a simple intention to improve her health. She never imagined that the decision would take her from a local gym in Rajasthan to international powerlifting competitions. Today, her journey proves that it is possible to start something new at any stage of life. It is never too late to start again and give a new meaning to your life.
