‘Heeramandi’, the Netflix original web series has become the talk of the town. While the acting of Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Taha Shah Badussha and many more has received appreciation, one character that stole the show with his magnetic presence was Ustaad Ji, played by the enigmatic Indresh Malik.
Indresh Malik is an incredible actor who’s been in TV shows, movies, and different web series. You might’ve seen him in shows like “12/24 Karol Bagh,” “Haar Jeet,” and “I Luv My India.” Recently, his role as Bittu Ji in “Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon” also became famous before he hit it big with “Heeramandi.” What sets him apart is how he picks roles that shake things up in the entertainment world.
Indresh has totally nailed it as Ustaad Ji in Heeramandi. In a candid conversation with The Global Hues, he spills the beans on how he got into acting, what it was like working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali and what’s next for him in the industry.
What made you choose acting as your career? What is the story hidden behind the Indresh Malik whom we all know today?
I’ve always aspired to be an actor, so I followed that dream. I’m a dedicated artist, always striving for perfection. Even when I look back at my performances, I often think I could have done a bit better. But if my director is satisfied with my work, then I’m content.
You have played many diverse roles in different movies and web series like Gumraah, Paatal Lok, Maska, Home Shanti, Naagin and more. How did it all begin?
I was born and raised in Delhi, where I completed my schooling. I cultivated my passion for acting at the ‘Drama Society’ at Kirori Mal College. Also, I am very grateful to have had the chance to hone my skills under my guru Ibrahim Alkazi. Moreover, from childhood, I participated in amateur theatre and later on in professional theatre.
I come from a business family. My father was a successful businessman and a well-read person. Coming from a Punjabi background, choosing acting was considered ‘insecure’ because it doesn’t guarantee immediate success and involves a lot of struggles. My father wanted me and my brother to take care of his businesses. Life happened, I got married and then I landed a role in a TV serial. The rest as they say is history.
Fifteen years later, I find myself playing Ustaadji in Heeramandi; and I am grateful to the almighty, Sanjay Leela Bhansali Ji, Bhansali Productions and the audience for giving me immense love and support.
Your ‘Nath’ scene in Heeramandi with Sonakshi Sinha has become the talk of the town. How was the experience?
All the credit goes to the Director, Writer, and Heeramandi’s team. Sanjay Leela Bhansali Ji had a very clear and strong vision. I respect and love his vision. He is a cinematic genius, who guided me through the scenes, and I acted accordingly.
You’ve worked with many different directors. How was your experience working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali?
Working with Sanjay Leela Bhansali Ji was a truly unique experience. I learnt a lot from him and believe that I will learn as much as I can until I am alive. It was a wonderful experience and a dream come true.
What next’s on the chart? Are you taking up some new roles or any other projects coming up soon?
Nothing has been formalised yet. “Kuch naamchin logo ne mujhe contact kiya hai.” (I have been approached by some renowned people.) The audience’s expectations have risen and I don’t want to disappoint them. I will try to rise to the level of adulation I have gotten from my audience. A new benchmark is set. I will try my level best to do justice to all my roles.
Any message for the audience?
My message for everyone would be “Be happy, live and let live.”
