How YouTube’s 1.9 Million Video Removals in India Signal a Safer Online Environment

News

Did you know that YouTube has removed over 1.9 million videos in India from its website? Shocking! Isn’t it?

According to the company, the videos were removed because they violated the community guidelines. Most videos had wrong information and harmful and unsafe content, especially for minors.

Owned by Google, YouTube is a social media video-sharing platform which was launched on February 14, 2005. It is the second-most visited website after Google. Video categories include music videos, news, short films, feature films, documentaries, movie trailers, teasers, live streams, vlogs, and more. At present, there are more than 800 million videos on YouTube. Since YouTube has a vast majority of videos, it becomes difficult to check every violation. So, YouTube has created guidelines to upload content on the website. The content gets removed if it doesn’t comply with the guidelines.

What Is The Reason Behind The Removal?

The reason behind the removal of videos is the violation of guidelines given by YouTube for uploading the content. Let’s look into these reasons:

Copyright Infringement

It is one of the common reasons why YouTube removes the videos. If the content a person posts on YouTube has content that they don’t own or have permission to cite the content, then YouTube removes it. Copyright allows the creator to own that content and control it.

Inappropriate Content

YouTube removes the content that has pornography, sexually explicit content, or nudity. It also removes those videos that are violent and are related to child pornography.

Terms and Service Violations

  • Dangerous Content: Anything that encourages impressionable viewers to partake in any unsafe and harmful activity is at risk of being removed.
  • Hateful Content: If there is anything derogatory or hateful against a particular race, caste, creed, or colour in the content, YouTube removes it.
  • Attempt To Threaten Or Bully: If the content attempts to bully and threaten anyone in the comments section, YouTube blocks that account.
  • Spam Or Misleading Information: This includes scams, repetitive content, misleading information, and other forms of spam.
  • Privacy: If someone posts a video of any other person without their explicit permission, the person can always report it, and YouTube can take down that video.

Youtube’s Quality Control

When you sign up for YouTube, you agree to its terms and conditions, which include following the guidelines for posting appropriate content. Here are some of the guidelines for posting content:

  • Spam and Deceptive Practices: Content that contains scams, misleads, or defraud other users isn’t allowed on YouTube.
  • Sensitive Content: YouTube strives to protect viewers, especially minors. The platform doesn’t allow posting content that is violent and has humiliation scenes.
  • Violent or Dangerous Content: YouTube doesn’t allow hate speech, graphic violence, and content that promotes dangerous and harmful activities.
  • Misinformation: The platform does not allow misleading or deceptive content, like promoting harmful home remedies, technically manipulated content, or content interfering with democratic processes.

Points To Consider Before Uploading A Video

Once you have created the content, it is necessary to know how to upload it and the measures to take while uploading the content. Here are some of them:

  • If you don’t want your video to be removed for copyright infringement, then you need to post the content which is yours. You can also put up a disclaimer, giving credit to the person from whom you have taken the content.
  • Don’t include content that has child pornography and graphic violence.
  • It is necessary to verify that your content doesn’t contain misinformation, scams, graphic scenes, nudity, harassment, or threats.
  • YouTube prohibits content that solely exists to incentivise viewers to engage. (views, likes, comments)
  • Do not copy from someone’s channels and videos. YouTube automatically closes such types of accounts.
  • YouTube doesn’t allow content that shows illegal activities that can cause physical harm or death.

In Conclusion

These are some guidelines you must follow while posting your content on YouTube. If your content complies with the YouTube guidelines, it stays on the website. But, if the content has violence, copyright infringement, or any other violation, then YouTube removes your videos and blocks your channel.
