Through every bottle flip, every fire trick, and every moment of doubt she turned into triumph, she left behind a powerful message: You can do it, too.
Kavita Medhar grew up in a small village in Karnataka, where opportunities were very few. Like any other child, she was expected to study well, get married and live happily. But somewhere along the way, life nudged her in a different direction.
Her family was going through tough times. Bills were piling up, and the weight of responsibility found its way to the young shoulder of Kavita. She needed a job that would help her contribute financially. So, she did something no one around her expected; she decided to join a bartending course. She walked into the academy and quickly realised that she was the only woman there. Instead of applauding, people used to whisper, questioning her decision. Undeterred by people’s opinions, Kavita moved forward.
Holding Her Ground
There were days when Kavita felt invisible in the room, not because of her talent, but because she was a woman in a male-dominated environment. She could feel the pressure of expectations pressing down on her. But she had made a promise to herself not to walk away and chase purpose.
Practice became her new routine. While others clocked out after class, she stayed behind, flipping bottles till her arms ached and her hands blistered. Slowly and steadily, she mastered the art of bartending. What Kavita does is called flair bartending, where bartenders entertain through the fun and exciting way of making drinks. It involves flipping, juggling, and spinning bottles and shakers to entertain people while preparing cocktails.
Her dedication paid off when she set a world record of flipping 122 bottles in one minute. This achievement didn’t just motivate her to grow, but also proved to the world that women are no less.
Life, of course, had more in store. Her life took a major turn when she became a mother. For many, this could mean taking a step back, but Kavita found a new kind of strength in motherhood. One can see many videos of her juggling the bottles in one hand and holding her baby in the other. These videos speak volumes about her passion for the craft of bartending. It shows that passion doesn’t have to end with parenthood. In fact, for Kavita, it only made her stronger.
Bartending to New Heights
To take the art of bartending to new heights, she travelled to cities, performed at events and began conducting workshops to encourage more women to explore this profession. Slowly, the stereotypes started to break. People no longer looked at her with doubt, but with admiration.
More than just about flipping bottles, her workshops were about flipping mindsets. Every woman she trained became another story of change.
What makes Kavita’s story inspiring is the courage she showed in choosing an unconventional dream and staying true to it. She didn’t follow a path laid out for her. She carved her own. Kavita has proved that no matter where you come from or what others say, you can always challenge the ordinary. Her story continues to inspire many, especially young women, to believe in themselves and step into spaces where they were once told they didn’t belong.
