8 Countries and 8 Plates: A Culinary Trip Around the World

Travel

When we travel, we click a lot of pictures, visit monuments and shop for souvenirs. But what is that one thing that we never forget? The food. From a spicy curry in India to a warm bowl of pasta in Italy, food has a unique emotion that connects us to places in a way nothing else can. Food has the ingrained ability to explain about people, traditions and their lifestyle.

Let’s explore how eight different types of cultures express themselves through their food.
  • India

India has one of the most diverse food cultures in the world. In the north, you’ll find butter chicken, naan, and creamy gravies. In the south, there’s dosa, sambar, and coconut-flavoured dishes.

Moreover, you will find Indian streets full of spicy, tangy and full of flavoured food. Every region, religion, and family add their own twist to traditional dishes.

Travel Tip: Try a home-cooked Indian thali (plate with different dishes). You’ll understand the love Indians put into their food.

  • France

If you are looking forward to finding class and quality, France is the place. It’s a place where you will find buttery croissants, creamy cheese, rich sauces, and tasty bread.

Each part of France has its own special dish — like coq au vin (chicken in wine) or bouillabaisse (seafood stew). And of course, wine is a big part of the meal.

Travel Tip: Visit a small café and try the “menu du jour” (daily special). It’s usually delicious and not too expensive.

  • Japan

Japanese food is synonymous with fresh ingredients, balance and beauty. In Japan, each dish is prepared with care, whether it’s super famous sushi, miso soup, or a bowl of noodles.

Food here is not just about taste. It’s also about how it looks and how it’s served. Even tea is a quiet, peaceful ritual in Japan.

Travel Tip: Try small restaurants or eat at a local izakaya (Japanese-style pub). You can also stay at a traditional inn (ryokan) and enjoy a full Japanese meal.

  • Italy

Well, Italian food is loved by many. Italy is known for its tasty food and warm-hearted people. But Italian food isn’t the same everywhere, each region has its own style.

In the northern area, you’ll find creamy risottos, while in the southern part, tomato-based pastas and seafood are popular. And, of course, how can we forget gelato and fresh espresso?

Travel Tip: Visit a local food market or join a cooking class in Florence or Rome. It’s a fun way to learn about Italian ingredients and recipes.

  • Mexico

If you are looking forward to colourful, bold and full-of-life food, then Mexican cuisine is the perfect food for you. Not only tacos, you can try tamales (steamed corn dough), mole sauce (chocolate and spices), and spicy soups in Mexico.

Corn, beans, and chillies are the heart of many dishes, and they’ve been used for thousands of years.

Travel Tip: Visit a local market in Oaxaca. You can try traditional snacks, sweets, and even roasted grasshoppers (if you’re feeling adventurous!).

  • Thailand

Thai food is loved by many as it offers a perfect mix of flavours. In one bite, you might taste sweet mango, spicy chilli, and sour lime.

From street-side noodles to fancy curries, Thai dishes are fresh, colourful, and full of herbs.

Travel Tip: Street food in Bangkok or Chiang Mai is a must try. It’s affordable and super tasty, especially mango sticky rice or pad thai!

  • Greece

Greek cuisine is simple, fresh, and full of love. With dishes like moussaka, souvlaki, tzatziki, and fresh Greek salads, every meal feels like sunshine on a plate.

You will absolutely love olive oil, herbs, and feta. And don’t forget the sweet, flaky baklava!

Travel Tip: Visit a local taverna in a small village or island and order whatever the locals are having. Enjoy your food slowly with conversation.

  • Peru

Peruvian cuisine is getting global recognition for its creativity and flavour. With influences from Indigenous, Spanish, African, and Asian cuisines, dishes like ceviche, lomo saltado, and causa are both unique and unforgettable.

Travel Tip: In Lima, book a food tour to explore the best of street food, cevicherías (ceviche bars), and world-famous restaurants.
